California to Florida? Five hours in the air – perfectly acceptable, in fact a marvel.
18 Hours of air and airport time over two days for that trip – oh my aching back. (I did accept, indeed quietly and with grace, that on the first flight a 300 pound man chose the middle seat to my left. It happens.)
And so today is about fresh air, newspapers, red grapefruit from my tree and a lot of coffee brewed my way. Plus a nap. And some strawberries I think.
You can have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, or democracy. But you cannot have both.

Ah yes, nothing like getting up close and personal in a sealed aluminum tube, sitting in a cramped, fixed position while breathing over-dry, pre-breathed thin air with a hundred irritable strangers.
What, no screaming baby? I thought a minimum of one of those was a basic requirement for every flight! 🙂
Mollie was telling me just yesterday about watching the old “Airport 75” on the treadmill TV. Despite the disaster (in-air collision) she said it brought back memories of when airplanes were seldom full and when the stewardesses still had nerves left.

tell Mollie that I remember meals on real plates with cloth napkins . . . and did you ever fly on an early 727(?) when they still had the bar/lounge in the rear, couches and all?

Ha. Somehow I missed that – it couldn’t have lasted long. Also missed the 747 lounges with the piano bar. I was under the government’s thumb when I flew in those days and when we did it was in the cheap seats.

Ah, it was the 747! I must have thought that it was so long ago that I decided it had to be the 727. The piano bar by the way was for coach. First class had something even fancier!

well james, see Jim’s correction above – it was hte 747 – those stairs in first class went to a ‘2nd floor’ lounge, but there was still that piano bar in back for us common folk. Remarkable really!

I once had to flew from Honolulu to Memphis with a woman so morbidly obese they rearranged the passengers to leave an empty seat ‘twixt her and me. So that worked out well. That was back when planes had smoking sections for long flights.

I can’t even imagine that flight without a cigarette (were I still a smoker, which – thank Elvis – I am not!) Don’t know how people do it today.

Not on a plane . At a concert last year I sat next to a large gentleman, It was only a few hours and that was enough. I can only laugh in sympathy at your experience .
