Sobering words and numbers from Nate Silver at The New York Times today – the electoral college projection particularly is unnerving. Story here [CAUTION, NY Times paywall link). I think it’s possible that a veep debate could, unusually, make a difference if Biden nails it.
Mr. Romney may have increased his chances of becoming president by 15 or 20 percent based on one night in Denver.
I never realized how important the outcomes of these political debates were (believing debate outcomes were secondary to the candidates’ policy positions) until I watched that PBS Frontline episode on Romney/Obama a few nights ago. Ted Kennedy trounced Romney in the 1994 Senate race debate, and then Romney out-debated Shannon O’Brien in the 2002 gubernatorial campaign. Both debates were decisive to the election outcomes.

Hey ojmo – this debate though was, I think “in a class by itself”. Not just cuz Romney outperformed Obama but because Obama seemed to just forfeit the debate. Odd in the extreme.

Odd indeed. Well, if he forfeited the debate, this is a hell of a time for it. He owes the nation something; two Supreme Court justices, if nothing else.

And THAT, pal, is my number one concern.
