Ronald Reagan: union man

Reagan was a long time president of SAG, the Screen Actors’ Guild, or union. Here he is celebrating the Solidarity movement in Poland, which was the very beginning of the end of the Soviet Union. Solidarity was led by Lech Walensa, later President of Poland, but at that time a union boss. Regan: “Those workers remind us that where free unions and collective bargaining are forbidden, freedom is lost.” And that’s what Solidarity was fighting for – the right to collective bargaining.

Thank a union guy!

Author Stephen King (born poor in the state of Maine; worked his butt off; got rich; has a house down here) stopped into the Awake The State Rally in Sarasota FL last week. To the delight of the crowd, he took the mic.

Some choice bits:

At 1:45   I’m a rich guy. I pay 28% in taxes and I want to know why I don’t have to pay 50%!

At 4:35  If you like a weekend, thank a union guy. If you like a 40 hour week, thank a union guy.

Proud to have you as a neighbor Mr. King. Sir.

Scott Walker vs. the unions

POSTED BY ORHAN

The most controversial parts of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s Budget Repair Bill are in the section “State and Local Government and School District Labor Relations” that covers limits to collective bargaining by public employees. Some of the important points:

  • Many public employees will lose all rights to collectively negotiate better contracts.
  • For public unions that can still negotiate better contracts, the best they’ll be able to do is fight to keep wages even with inflation – it will be illegal to address any other grievance.
  • Public union members who participate in an organized action to stop or slow work (e.g., strike) can be fired – the unions’ main bargaining chip will be swept off the table.
  • Even if a public union manages to negotiate a favorable contract, it can’t last more than a year.
  • Public unions will be forced to hold yearly elections just to maintain their own existence.

Now if that isn’t union-busting, I don’t know what is.
