The thing that wouldn’t die

POSTED BY ORHAN

222px-Paul_RyanPaul Ryan is at it again; he’s agreed to cosponsor the Sanctity of Human Life Act yet one more time. The bill asserts that life begins with fertilization, and permits states to ban abortion outright, even in the case of rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother.

And besides outlawing many forms of in vitro fertilization, the bill goes on: if a woman is raped in an abortion-banning state, then goes to an abortion-permitting state intending to have an abortion, her rapist can sue to stop the abortion, and win.

The prior version of this way-over-the-top bill died in Congress, and it’s expected this one will too. But Ryan’s ongoing attempt to repeal women’s reproductive rights exemplifies conservative entitlement; politicians like Ryan, along with conservative employers and landlords, sanctimoniously believe their morality outweighs the rights of those they govern and control.

From Ben this morning:

VATICAN CITY — Political action in the name of God or religion is a “favorite instrument of the Antichrist,” Pope Benedict XVI writes in a new book on the life and teachings of Jesus.

“Conservatives do not build up the kingdom of God, the kingdom of humanity, when they set out to destroy the middle class” Benedict writes. “On the contrary, it is a favorite instrument of the Antichrist, however idealistic its religious motivation may be. It serves not humanity, but inhumanity. The devil hates the middle-class”

Okay, these aren’t the Pope’s exact words; the pope says ‘violence’ in the name of religion. But any linguist would define ‘violence’ as ‘politics by other means’ or ‘the failure of politics’.  And any theologian would agree in terms of the Pope’s meaning (given that he himself is quite conservative, this is a powerful statement).

It’s entirely true that around the world it’s the Right that embraces fundamentalism and extreme religion (as long as it’s their own of course).

His point is clear enough – don’t bring God into your political arguments. It leads to trouble.

Talk Radio Ethics 101

Brucetheeconomist just remined me in a thread about a blog I used to follow, so I stopped over there and found a link to this from Raw Story.

The  company responsible for syndicating big conservative radio names like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity has been using paid actors to call in to their radio shows. . . . “Premiere On Call is our new custom caller service,” the website said. “We supply voice talent to take/make your on-air calls, improvise your scenes or deliver your scripts. Using our simple online booking tool, specify the kind of voice you need, and we’ll get your the right person fast. Unless you request it, you won’t hear that same voice again for at least two months, ensuring the authenticity of your programming for avid listeners.”

Who’s surprised?
