From a recent homily by Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria (unfortunate name that):
[some governments] “tried to force Christians to huddle and hide only within the confines of their churches . . . Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services and health care . . . In clear violation of our First Amendment rights, Barack Obama – with his radical, pro-abortion and extreme secularist agenda – now seems intent on following a similar path.”
So . . . comprehensive health care / ethic cleansing and genocide . . . not very different actually.
I’m sure we’re all pretty versed in the disgraceful behavior of the Catholic Church hierarchy in the pedophile scandal. As horrendous as the actions of the involved priests were, they were criminal matters and should have been handled as such. The disgrace to me has been the Church’s own reaction: cover up by bishops, cover up by Vatican hierarchy, tolerance of the behavior. A good deal of the cover up was also criminal behavior, but no need to hold our breaths on that one.
As a woman, raised Catholic, who left its odd embrace in my late teens, I’ve always viewed it as a ‘woman hating’ institution. I still feel that way. Ironically, had they been able to get past that and abandon celibacy, I don’t believe this would ever have happened.
If priests were parents, if bishops were parents, this would never have been tolerated. It’s their very place outside the human experience that allowed such perversion of moral judgement to thrive.
Because his blame-the-victim theory of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church really contributes to the discussion. He is a stellar example of what’s wrong with the Catholic Church and it’s woman hating and it’s fear of the power of sex. Donohue goes off the rails at 7:15 in – near the end.
UPDATE: Can’t get the damn video to link. But it’s at CNN’s site – Larry King show.
UPDATE THE SECOND: Just heard Pat Buchanan on Hardball – he sounds much more sane than Donohue, but he is subtly making Donohue’s point. Wonder if any of the others on the panel hear what he’s actually just said.
