2008? Dear Elvis, a quarter century after he was elected President and won the Nobel Peace Prize? We really really can’t get anything done in a timely manner in this country, can we? With the possible exception of going to war of course.

It’s even more ironic since the govt. had no problems “sending” me to South Africa to work for Mandela just 6 months or so after he took power.
Note that “sending” was quoted because I’m not sure who originally brokered the deal with my company or under what terms. It could have been purely private-sector on the US side but, even then, the State Dept. had to sign off on the contract like any other work for a foreign government.

I’ve never been to Antartica; I turned down the job because I wasn’t going to let myself be trapped on a research vessel with hundreds of scientists, their grad students, and all the resulting drama.
Also, I’ve never been to mainland China aside from two very short trips to Shanghai after they started the major overhaul of the city in order to destroy Hong Kong.
And, oddly enough, I’ve never been in over half the European countries except to pass through them on the trains or fly over them.

ojmo, has the right of history in this case. Mandela was a terrorist, an insurrectionist, and was directly allied with various groups which were even worse than he was. He was also, later, pretty close to exactly the living saint – deliberate irony – that he was portrayed as being.
