Let’s let Bill Maher explain

Mr. Limbaugh of Palm Beach along with the rest of the perpetually outraged professional right-wing defend the four times married morbidly obese one with what they claim is equivalence:”But Bill Maher called Palin a cunt!”.

Silly comparison. Maher explains it precisely:

MAHER:  To compare that to Rush is ridiculous – he went after a civilian about very specific behavior, that was a lie, speaking for a party that has systematically gone after women’s rights all year, on the public airwaves. I used a rude word about a public figure who gives as good as she gets, who’s called people “terrorist” and “unAmerican.” Sarah Barracuda. The First Amendment was specifically designed for citizens to insult politicians. Libel laws were written to protect law students speaking out on political issues from getting called whores by Oxycontin addicts.

  2. I think I get the distinction, but all things considered I don’t think Maher’s use of the language is commendable. While in some sense words can only hurt you if you let them, I’d see no harm and maybe even a little good in going back to some words just not being used except under very limited circumstances, and not to attack those whose politics we disagree with.

Please don’t take this as arguing that the FCC or the state in any broad fashion should enforce such rules however. I’m just stating what I would prefer to hear less of.

    • 🙂 . . . I know you’re expressing a preference and don’t want to see it be a matter for govt, but there is another thing . . . Limbaugh’s EIB network uses the publicly owned airwaves to do his dirty business, while Mahar operates in an entirely free market capitalistic environmet witth no government assistance!

A civilian taking part in a mock hearing trumped up by Democrats. You might be able to say that when she did this, she lost the innocent blushing co-ed label.

By the way, upon graduation from Georgetown? She earns 160 large. Starting. This gal is hardly incapable.

speaking for a party that has systematically gone after women’s rights all year

Speaking of lies, there’s been no “going after women’s rights” at all. The fact that liberals think that’s the case makes me wonder how we got to where we are. No one is denying a woman anything. No one is banning anything. No one is restricting a woman from doing anything.

All this debate is about is whether or not a woman should be able to get any ol’ thing she wants for free.

I used a rude word about a public figure who gives as good as she gets

So…..let me get this straight. If Hannity, or Rush, or Beck were to call Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton a cunt, the left would just be all “Jeez guys, come on……THAT is Hannity’s RIGHT to use that word, it’s the First Amendment we all love in action! Leave the poor man alone.”

You have to be honest, the left would erupt.

    • [No one is banning anything. No one is restricting a woman from doing anything.] Correct, they’re just trying their damndest in State Houses all around the country. Some of these utterly bizarre laws have eeven passed, although I imagine they’re being challened. And those llaws have absollutely nothing to do with who pays.

As for Fluke – she is not a ‘co-ed’ (and who uses that word in this century anyway?); she is a 30-year old woman who has prepared hersself at great expense and with hard work to enter a profession. And what, pino, does her anticipated salary have to do with anything? Does that mean she’s no longer a private citizen? Does testifying before Congress make you the same kind of publiic figure as a former Governor, VT candidate and cable news personality who gets paid for being politically famous? They are WORLDS apart. And ‘incapable’? Whoever attached that word to her?

[If Hannity, or Rush, or Beck were to call Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton a cunt, the left would just be all “Jeez guys, come on] No, it would be rude of course, as was Mahar calling Palin a ‘slut’, but they’re public political figures, so it would be exactly the same as Maher slurring Palin.

  5. Firstly, wouldn’t this only apply if one was “genderblind” when it comes to women’s rights, and wouldn’t being so be as “bad” as being “colorblind” is considered by the Left when it comes to racial relations?

Secondly, while I can understand the presented distinction, isn’t just really saying that it OK to insult a women however you want to if that woman had the temerity to be successful and wield some level of power? I guess the stupid uppity cunt deserved it for not staying in the kitchen and daring to be a Governor and VP Nominee????

Might want to think about that in the light of your previous complaints about people insulting Michelle Obama, a public figure of no small force of personality.

    • jonolan – I don’t suggest that gender has anything to do with the comparison Maher made – nor did he I don’t think. It’s about challenging false equivalency re the insults – private citizen vs public political figure. People insulting Michelle Obama? I can object, challenge what’s said, I can mock whoever says it, but I sure wouldn’t say she’s not fair game; she too is a publlic – albeit not political except by relation – figure.

  6. No, Maher’s comparison was “genderblind” in that it ignored the gender base of the insults involved. As you’ve pointed out, those particular insults are gendered.

There’s also the point that Fluke stopped being a private citizen the moment she chose to join Pelosi’s little circus performance. EIther that, or nobody should have been OK with insulting Wurzelbacher until he ran for office.
