The Democrats’ 60’s legacy: will that become the Republicans’ 00’s legacy?

The Democratic Party is still trying to shake association with the student demonstrators, war protestors, flower children and the more radical leftists of the late 60’s and early 70’s. That ‘commie, hippie’ label comes from that long ago time – from events of 40 years ago.

I look at the Republican party today and wonder if they’ll pay a similar price for  embracing the Tea Party, the birthers, the creationists and the rancid religious right. Could this be their 60’s? I wonder if indeed they’ll pay a price – and for how long.

In fact, I wonder if they’ll survive the 2012 elections. If the conservative electorate is splintered enough, Democrats could get to pick up the pieces at all levels.

The difference is that what the Tea Party is for is sanity in Government spending . That is only radical and crazy to aging Commie Hippie retreads . There is a coming generational battle between old and young . As today’s young become tomorrow’s middle agers they will naturally become more conservative . As today’s baby boomers become tomorrow’s AARP idiots , those middle aged gen xers and those behind them will refuse to fund a dead end ponzi scheme that they will not benefit from.

    • I dunno, Alan, I don’t think it’s so true that people become more conservative as they age. I started out as a Randian ultra-capitalist in my teens; now I’m a solid liberal. Who knows what changes life will bring? If it happened to me, it could happen to you, too.

      • I wasn’t quite Randian ojmo, but I was a member of YAF – in those days it was “Young Americans for Freedom”; it became the “Young Americans Foundation”.

I grew up in an activist Democratic family, so YAF was my rebellion moment. Didnt last long.
