Wanna bet?

So here we are, in yet another Middle East war, this time to avert a “bloody rout of rebels by forces loyal to Col. Qaddafi.”

Al Jazeera call the rebels “pro-democracy” forces, and maybe they are…

And maybe this time the US is really going to war for humanitarian reasons…

And maybe we won’t be “forced” to commit ground troops…

Figure the odds.

  1. Yeah. Intervening in Libya is really dumb for a whole host of reasons. I will post the conservative rationale in just over an hour on my site.

  2. Uh oh, here we go again.

  3. Are we really ‘ in ‘ ? If we were getting ‘ in ‘, it should have been weeks ago . Now is pretty late .

    • A well-reasoned and comprehensive analysis, Sean. Let’s all hope the situation plays out with an absolute minimum of US involvement.

  4. I suspect that US involvement will be relatively light. This is more about PR than anything else.

A few AWACS here, a few ECM jammers there. That’s about it.

    • I’ve been hearing a lot of PR about the fleet in the Med. I think we have to count that in.

Yesterday Obama was absolutely clear that we are NOT taking the lead. Later, the network news reported ‘with the US taking hte lead’. ??

  5. Ms. Holland,

Well looks like we are in . We fired our first cruise missile on Libya’s air defense to open up things for the Europeans. And I thought Obama was all talk.

  6. Ms. Holland,

” Does this please you Alan? I’ll be thrilled if we’re quick in and out, but I’m not holding my breath. ”

You know I have to do something I absolutely hate to do . I have to take your hero President O bama at his word . You know what I think that is worth . Our President has said that this is about saving innocent lives . Besides President O bama said no American ground troops . This is really the French and the British’s baby. We are a junior member for a change of a war coalition. Otherwise President O bama would not be partying in Brazil now . He must not think it is that big a deal .

    • Frogs are falling from the skies! I hope you’re right Alan. If we pull back after this initial foray, I guess I’m okay with that.

But too many years of mission creep – beginning in Vietnam – have pretty much made me wary.

If you haven’t already, read that George Will column.

  7. Ms. Holland,

I read George Will. I also read where Bill Clinton expressed his regret for not intervening in Rwanda and saving hundreds of thousands of lives . This is said to have been a factor for Obama caving in and going along . Clinton also had said about a week ago that he favored a no fly zone .

What a crazy mixed up world this is . You citing George Will and me citing Bill Clinton .
