Watch your back
From an email I just received – twice – from women friends. A brief and sadly incomplete list of the little things Republicans try to do to women and their filthy offspring. (I used to think it was only the Catholic Church that officially hated women, but I may have to admit the GOP to those ranks.)
1) Republicans not only want to reduce women’s access to abortion care, they’re actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven’t.
2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to “accuser.” But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain “victims.”
3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)
4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.
5) In Congress, Republicans have proposed a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids’ preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.
7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.
8.) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.
9) Congress voted yesterday on a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.
10) And if that wasn’t enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program.
You can have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, or democracy. But you cannot have both.
Whatever Works 
I received the same list from MoveOn.org last week. I love how they demand that every fetus be protected, than want to ignore them when they’re born.

You know what they’re doing? They’re targeting Democratic voters. They’re trying to bust unions who give a lot of money to the Democratic Party. They’re making it harder to register new voters, who are often young and lean Democratic. And they’re targeting the poor, who often vote Democratic.
Throw in the cutting off or financial support or the downright terrorizing of unwed or single mothers, and you have a bright and shiny regime built to last for decades.

I’m getting pretty nervous about what’s around us right now. This is ugly stuff and there is more and more of it – all over hte place. Ignorance celebrated; misinformation ascendant . . . don’t like it at all.

1. I agree with you on this one. I hate that move by Republicans.

3. This is misleading. His bill speaks to illegal acts. Abortion is legal in SD.
4. Which is it? Mothers or women? What’s the difference between a kid and a baby? And…any of that money cut currently going to me, fathers, sons and male children?

The list is ‘spun’ fer sure pino – but how about if (#4) legislators wherever cut all funds for high school sports. While it would affect boys as well as girls, it’s the boys who would feel it most. Same kind of reasoning for #8.
Dont know what you mean about Planned Parenthood? How have they been a poor steward? (They’re mostly funded by private donations; they get about a third of their funds from gov’t grants to provide services not provided by others.)

Yep, everytime a find an new and idiotic bill somewhere in America, it’s proposed by a REthuglian. Sick people. And the only fairly rational ones left are being targeted for removal by teabagger zealots. Sometimes I can’t hardly bare to open the reader and see what fresh hell awaits. Sigh…

Moe, how would you feel about mandatory castration of convicted sex offenders? I think it would solve a lot of problems – and the same idiots that would most likely be against it on the basis of “violating another’s body”, are most likely anti-choice…figure that one out.

Castration has tyrannical overtones that make most people uncomfortable. And certainly one owuld have to draw a line between – say – date rape and stranger rape.

Regarding the South Dakota bill, it’s alarming that similar legislation is under consideration right now in Iowa and Nebraska too. What is HAPPENING to this country?

Ahab – whatever is happening to this country it scares me. We’ve always had that religious fundamentalist strain in our national life, but it was considered a fringe element. But with TV they attracted the kind of moeny they never had and ministries like Pat Robertson’s took hold. And by the 80’s, they were gaining power in the Republican party. They’ve been advancing their agenda bit by bit – they do it by electing extremists.
This is entirely a right wing phenomenon and it’s gaining traction. That’s what scares me.

Reconstructionists vs. dominionists? Hmmm. I’ve heard the terms used interchangeably, but some commentators distinguish the two. “Dominionism” is seen as a blanket term for those who want fundamentalist Christianity to permeate every aspect of society. “Reconstructionism”, a subtype of dominionism, indicates someone who wants to institutionalize Old and New Testament laws.
Yeah, you’re right about the political situation right now. Things are getting scary, particularly for reproductive rights. If there was ever a time to speak up, it’s now.

You’re right of course and I admire the hell out of those who don’t get discouraged. Because it is discouraging. I have a friend, a Democratic Party activist – he works long hours, has obligations at home, volunteers for lots of stuff and still manages to be the mover behind dozens of major local initiatives every year. I get tired just talking to him, but man do I admire him!
