Creepy ad watch

Seen this TV ad? It’s everywhere and it’s creepy. It’s brought to you by Americans Against Food Taxes  (the website is just as creepy as the ad).

Here’s who they say they are:

Americans Against Food Taxes is a coalition of concerned citizens – responsible individuals, financially strapped families, small and large businesses in communities across the country – opposed to the government tax hikes on food and beverages, including soda, juice drinks, and flavored milks. The mission of the coalition is two-fold: 1) To promote a healthy economy and healthy lifestyles by educating Americans about smart solutions that rely upon science, economic realities and common sense; and 2) To prevent the enactment of regressive and discriminatory taxes that will not teach our children how to live a healthy lifestyle, and will have no meaningful impact on public health, but will have a negative impact on American families struggling in this economy

Doesn’t surprise me. How typical, an industry front group, sort of like the shadowy political ads that you see running on TV around election times, funded by some shadowy, mysterious front group, and given a universally appealing/misleading name, such as “Americans for Apple Pie” etc.
This is truly disgusting. And now they don’t have to reveal their funding, and they can contribute as much money as they want to political campaigns and candidates that they want to support in the local, state, or even national elections. This is sickening and rotten to the core.
    Thank you for sharing this.

  2. The problem is deeper than this. Our societies in general are based on consumption. The more you consume the better it is for the culture(capitalism). The problem is the more “Unhealthy” you are, the more you consume. You know what the 2 biggest sellers are in North America(and I would imagine elsewhere). Stimulants and pain killers. One to hop you up and the other to tell your body to shut up.

  3. I have no problem with corporate America standing up to the government control freaks. The government does not have the money to do essential tasks, yet the Socialists just can’t leave their greasy fingers off of everything else. That corporate America would run ads against big government policies that hurt their businesses is a surrrprise . Well duh .

You were joking, right? The only corporate America I am familiar with were the ones accepting the Socialist bailouts. Did you miss that part of the movie?

  6. This ad reminds me of “Harry and Louise” – the series of TV ads that featured the fictional couple sitting at their kitchen table, earenest, worried faces looking at the camera with their bills spread out in front of them. Their message was ‘America can’t afford this health care grab’. That was 1993.

Both actors were interviewed last year and said they really regretted that they would always have to carry that ad on their resumes (actors don’t control their own resumes for those who challenge the concept).

    • The ad is so damn transparent, maybe viewers DO see just that. Of course, that’s in my dreams – most likely they’ll come away screaming ‘git the gubmint outta my cooler!’

  9. One of the main reason we are a country of fat slobs is that people consider soft drinks food. I see nothing wrond in taxing items with no nutitional value. What’s next “Don’t tax my SKITTLES”?

    • Taxing skittles is fine, just don’t tax Twinkies! Do you rmeember that when the guy who invented Twinkies (the first junk food that wasn’t candy) it was Page One in the NY Times?

Our ‘corporate overlords’ want us fat and stupid. It’s good for business.

Alright, prove what you just said. I believe that the evil corporations primarily in this topic are the food and beverage corporations. Please list the bailouts that Coke and Pepsi got. I must have missed those .

” I just wish she would get robbed on her way to her car and scream “Help! Government! Get involved in my life and arrest this thief!” ”

I pray you are not a smoker because your Liberal-Progressive Strawman would have burst into flame.

Limited government does not mean no government. If government would stop doing all of these nanny state things it would do a better job of protecting us from robbers. Tell me you can grasp that ?

    Ms. Holland,

” Our ‘corporate overlords’ want us fat and stupid. It’s good for business. ”

So we are too stupid to decide what to eat and drink ? So Liberals get to decide for us all what we can choose to consume ? And we pay our Liberal overlords in taxes to make those decisions ? Sounds right to me 🙂

Thank God, not Elvis that we have caring people collecting a paycheck to simplify our lives.

Actually Alan, just a look around at the Mall should confirdm for you that indeed we are too stupid – it’s not okay with me that we turn another generation of kids into obese sickly Americans. Cuz that’s what we get when TV advertising goes unchallenged when it’s tellingd the kids eat more, eat more fat, eat more sugar and on and on and on. Somewhere, a society is required to draw up guidelines or it will dissolve.

As for who gets to decide – the organizations that do that are going to work every day no matter what party is in power. The FDA, the CDC, the AMA, the American Cancer Society and on and on and on.

We’re supposed to try to improve ourselves. Is it wrong to have gym class at school or teach physical fitness? Is it okay to have McDonalds run the school cafeteria?

  11. “So we are too stupid to decide what to eat and drink ? ”
Not all of us but far too many of us are.

Try this instead! So we are so misinformed as to be stupid as to what to decide to safely eat and drink.

Wait! You don’t mean that it’s hurting public health and it’s our right not to know do you? Or do you know?

New Right-Wing campaign slogan, “if it’s bad for your health then it’s good for America, because good for America is good for the economy.” Oh! Pay for your own health care. Life is free but living isn’t.

    • You used a phrase that’s all but forgotten these days – PUBLIC HEALTH. We’ve always pursued it and always should. And that means telling the kids that the Big Mac will eventually kill them. Or at least make them very very sick.

  12. Freedom to be stupid. Yes, yes, yes. I wish to challenge all of your NANNY State thinking. I do not smoke. If I was a smoker, I would break the law every chance I got, just on principle . I would buy bootleg cigarettes. I would roll my own. Anything to screw the tax man. I would even grow my own tobacco if it was feasible.

Why should sm0kers be over taxed to support programs that have nothing to do with them. Wait, wait SMOKERS cost the NANNY STATE more in health care costs, so they ‘ have ‘ to be taxed more. Only all of the money is DIVERTED to everything else under the Sun. Yet there is still not enough money for the Liberal tax and spend NANNIES.

My point in this rant is to illustrate where the path that the food regulator Комиссарs ( Commissars ) is taking all of us .

” Actually Alan, just a look around at the Mall should confirdm for you that indeed we are too stupid – it’s not okay with me that we turn another generation of kids into obese sickly Americans. ”

If you are that stupid the government cannot save you and should not. Besides I like junk food. Why should ‘ I ‘ be taxed more because of others . Kinda like in your State of Florida in the 2000 election. If you are too stupid to know who you are voting for ( hanging chads etc. ), just maybe you are too stupid to vote .

You know,,, you know,,, the last historical incident that comes to mind where the NANNY STATE over stepped it’s boundaries was Prohibition. In that case it was a bunch of holy roller church women tired of dealing with the broken families of drunken working class men, who pushed that through. We all know how the public got around that law.

I can see it now, backwoods bakeries secretly making forbidden jelly doughnuts . Obama revenuers following their noses to bust them . Hot rod cars running in the dead of night, with secret compartments full of bootleg potato chips and twinkies, staying one step ahead of Michelle Obama’s fat po0lice .

    • [Why should sm0kers be over taxed] That’s an honorable old tradition, called a ‘sin tax’ and governments of all stripes have been levying them since taxes were invented. The Romans had sin taxes.
[If you are that stupid the government cannot save you and should not.] I don’t care about the government ‘saving me’ or any other individual. Let you and me MickeyD ourselves to death if we want. What I care about is what kind of cournty we have – a society full of fat people who think it’s their Elvis-given right to feed their kids crap so they can grow up and be diabetic and we can all pay for that is NOT fine with me. And there’s just something ugly about stateless, amoral corporations selling crap that makes people sick so they can make a big buck. It’s not business, it’s ugly business.

    • Your bootleg chips and twinkie scenario did make me laugh though.

What does Michelle Obama have to do with this anywya? Is it because she chose healthy food as her First Lady ’cause’?

      Like

  13. Ms. Holland,

I believe the First Lady is behind a lot of this nonsense forcing companies and schools to get rid of ” unhealthy ” foods .

In this tough economy I sense opportunity selling real food to salad haters . Then you have city Democrats telling businesses how much salt they can cook with . Where does it end ?

Just like drinkers, people will always find ways around these stupid food rules . But a bunch of liberals living off of other people’s taxes will believe they are saving the planet from fat people .

By the way, our beloved President is far too skinny. A couple of McRibs and milkshakes would do him a world of good . Better for him then those cigarettes I am sure he still sneaks .

    • I have to beleive you’re kidding, becuase if the First Lady is ‘behind’ forcing schools to get rid of unhealthy foods (a movement, by the way, that’s been underway for 20 years), well I say good for her. Cheer cheer Michelle and godspeed. I hope she succeeds.

  14. A lot of right-wing thinking is full of contradictions. Below is a quote from their laughable common sense health care approach that was probably hacked out in McDonald’s while choking down McRib Sandwiches along with super-sized cokes and fries. Nothing says healthy good goodness like a large dose of animal fat, high-fructose corn syrup, and empty calories saturated in frying oil.

“Promoting healthier lifestyles. The GOP plan promotes prevention & wellness by giving employers greater flexibility to financially reward employees who adopt healthier lifestyles. “

Now if the Republicans truly wanted to promote healthier lifestyles wouldn’t that end be better served by improving the health of our children in our schools? After all education should teach our children far more than about what goes into their heads such as reading, math, and arithmetic. It should also teach them a little about what goes into their bodies as well.

In the meantime we have to remind ourselves that they’re still children, and as with all children they require mature adult supervision over many of their choices. If we don’t teach it to them then they’ll learn it from TV advertising that carefully targets them with false promises of fun and toys. Michelle Obama should be commended for her efforts.
