Whatever Works 
The 50s through the 70s were America’s renaissance. Some contemporary bands are sounding like some of the music from back then, but they’re just copying rather than developing their own styles.

I think part of the diff is the effect of the introduction of amplifiers. They drown subtlety and melody.

They had amplifiers since the 40s. I don’t know what it is, but there sure doesn’t seem to be much creativity in music these days. The Vietnam war stimulated creativity back in the 60s and 70s. Maybe when we descend into a full scale depression in the next few years, that will do the same. When people are pissed or miserable, that fuels the need for self-expression.

Right. Think of the depression and the amazing folk music that came out of that – a tradition that continued right thru the 70’s. (Think Pete Seeger, Jackson Browne, Dylan etc)
The 12 year olds I know can sing along with every lyric to songs whose words I can’t even make out. Why is that?

You can find the lyrics to almost any song online these days. But you’re right… Back in the 60s and 70s, I couldn’t make out the lyrics to some of my favorite songs. Now you can even find the lyrics to Louie, Louie! 🙂
