Back in an oldie thread in September, Alan Johnson asked for this song – a version in which John Phillips ‘had his hat on’. Well, John has his hat on in most of this (there is one Live at Monterey in which the hat is on throughout, but the sound isn’t as good). So here you go Alan:

I have loved that song since I was a kid. Strange, really, considering it is a little somber and I generally prefer more upbeat fare…

I think of it as more wistful than somber. Maybe I better listen again.

The sentence, “If I didn’t tell her, I could leave today.” implies to me that the “California dreaming” is not simply yearning for a place, but also an escape from a doomed relationship. Maybe I’m reading too much into that…

Still love the song but sure didn’t remember that Mama Cass could move like that. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

The fattest man I ever danced wtih was also the most graceful man I ever danced with. Mama Cass reminds me of that.
