Does Glenn Beck know what good Americans did to Mormons?

1884 Mormon Massacre - one of many

I’ve posted before on the sorry history of American xenophobia – it’s such an old story. Looking at the recent hysteria about the NY mosque we can see it’s with us still – and just as misguided as ever. In his column today at The New York Times, Nicholas Kristof looks at some history.

“Perhaps the closest parallel to today’s hysteria about Islam is the 19th-century fear spread by the Know Nothing movement about “the Catholic menace.” . . .  there were whispering campaigns that presidents including Martin Van Buren and William McKinley were secretly working with the pope. . . . Critics warned that the pope was plotting to snatch the Mississippi Valley and secretly conspiring to overthrow American democracy. “Rome looks with wistful eye to domination of this broad land, a magnificent seat for a sovereign pontiff,” one writer cautioned.”

“In the 19th century, fears were stoked by books written by people who supposedly had “escaped” Catholicism. These books luridly recounted orgies between priests and nuns, girls kidnapped and held in secret dungeons, and networks of tunnels at convents to allow priests to rape nuns. One woman claiming to have been a priest’s sex slave wrote a “memoir” asserting that Catholics killed boys and ground them into sausage for sale. . . .  These kinds of stories inflamed a mob of patriots in 1834 to attack an Ursuline convent outside Boston and burn it down.”

As my grandmother used to say: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  1. Mormonism is more OCCULT than it is Christianity. Its filled with False Doctrine and deception. I knew people personally who belonged to LDS and they all left because of the same reason. Below I attached a few links to checkout but there is a whole lot more research you can dig up concerning Mormonism.

  2. Ms. Holland,

It is unfair to compare legal opposition to the building of a Mosque at ground zero to the murder of Mormons or the arson of a Convent. Your side is really stretching for material to demonize it’s enemies.

    • No it isn’t Alan. Because the anti-Islam fever is spreading in exactly the same way it did then. To deny that is to deny reality. Ohio, Illinois nad I believe Wisconsin chased hte Mormon out with a ‘not in my neighborhood’ cry until they ended up in Utah. Where, by the way, they faced another slaughter. This one killed a hundred – men, women and children.

    • My point being that this is not just about the mosque. It’s about a bigotry that is taking hold in this country. And it stinks.

    • Hey Alan, look what I just picked up at Ben’s place . . .

“To get a sense of where Keller is coming from, consider his project’s website, which calls Islam a religion of “hate and death” whose adherents will go to hell. It also says: “Islam is a wonderful religion… for PEDOPHILES!”

Keller is the same pastor who hosted a birther infomercial that encouraged viewers to send him and a partner donations to advance the birther cause. His Internet ministry explicitly calls President Obama the new Hitler. He calls homosexuality a perversion. And in 2008, he targeted presidential contender Mitt Romney for being Mormon with a campaign called “voting for Satan.””

  3. Ms. Holland,

” Hey Alan, look what I just picked up at Ben’s place . ”
I am aware of what he is posting and it’s getting crazier. Are you really worried about a harmless guy like Keller? Has he killed anyone? Has he called for violence against anyone? As far as Pedophiles, your buddy Hoffman has posted the same charge against the Catholic Church. There probably are some in every religion.

Why don’t you go over to Steve’s place and see what real bigots, Muslims are doing to Christians in Indonesia. See what Islam is really doing to the competing religions around the World. Oh, and we were discussing Egypt. The Arbourist posted something showing the consequences of being a non believer in Egypt. I brought up our discussion.

If you do the research you will find that the Mosque controversy in New York is not as serious as the stuff going on internationally.

    • I had forgotten you were boycotting Ben. In any case, he also talks about the Catholic church in that post and it happens to be something I know a great deal about. Over the course of every two weeks, I read the entire National Catholic Reporter to my father, who is blind. Quite ironic as I am secular and post-Catholic, but it’s a good paper with terrific reporters all over the world and inside the Vatican of course. The scandal in the church is not about the pedophiles per se (yes indeed, one finds them everywhere); the scandal is about the cover up (isn’t it always? Watergate and Iran Contra come to mind). The cover up went on for 30+ years as bishops all over the western world saw the issue as one of priestly sin, not of civil crimes. The bishops have a great deal to answer for as do three Vatican Secretaries of State and the last pope. The jury is still very much out about the current pope.

I know I sound like a broken record on this Alan, but re the bigotry and the anti-Islamic fever gripping our country right now: that Islamic countries behave badly is no excuse for us to do the same. And that’s where my problem arises.

  4. Moe did you do any research or came across any enlightening information about the TRUE origin of Mormonism? I posted some links earlier but I never got a response from you.

    • ap – Mormonism began in the mid 1800’s with a guy called Joseph Smith. He claimed to have found some tablets and then god spoke to him and dictated to him the Book of Mormon. Brigham Young was hte most dynamic leader after Smith. There’s a long sordid history of fighting among themselves and of wide spread bigotry in the country – they were literally chased out of many US states, which is why they ended up in what was the the Utah Territory. I’ve read a few books, titles of hwich I can’t remember, but start with the essential wikipedia.

      • Wikipedia is not a reliable source for information. But why do you think they were chased out of states??? Their doctrine goes against Christianity and it is not a church but a cult. I’m starting to believe you didn’t read those articles. And out of ALL religions Mormonism has had the hardest time spreading in Asia. Why is that you ask?? Because Mormon in Chinese means “Gates of Hell.” Don’t believe me? Continue doing more research.

        • ap, I’m not disagreeing with you. I find Mormonism weird. As apparently did the folks in the mid 19th century.

Wikipedia is open source and as such incorrect info gets up there often – the beauty is that it’s caught right away and challenged by other users. In its design, it’s as rigorous an information gathering process as we have in the modern world. It’s dynamic is absolutely organic. It’s become an essential tool. Did you look at the link to Mormonism? What in that entry would lead you to think it was unreliable. Looks pretty thorough and scholarly to me.

With ten million views per hour, I think internet users have voted on Wikipedia.
